Absentee ballots for military personnel PDF Print E-mail

Nov. 13, 2009

I recently voted in favor of legislation to allow active-duty military personnel to receive absentee ballots by e-mail, after a recent study revealed thousands of votes are not being counted because Michigan does not give military members serving overseas enough time to complete the process.

On average, it takes overseas military personnel 57 days to complete the voting process, but Michigan typically sends ballots out only 45 days in advance of an election.

It is absurd that the men and women of our armed forces who are risking their lives to defend our democracy are being denied the right to participate in it.

Allowing election clerks to send ballots by e-mail will speed the process. Military personnel will still have to print the ballots and send them back by traditional mail to help eliminate the potential for fraud.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it's an excellent time to start thinking about recognizing our many blessings. There is no doubt that these are tough times economically, but many of us can give thanks for our families and friends, for the roof over our heads and the food on our tables. We should also remember to give thanks for this great country, that even in troubled times, we still have many freedoms that so many others in the world do not have.

There are many worthwhile organizations in the area where we can spend time or donations to share our blessings. The Family Impact Center in Fowlerville, Gleaners Food Bank in Howell, the Salvation Army and many of our local churches can use any bit of help you can give.

I am also extremely thankful to be able to represent local residents in the state House in Lansing. There are certainly many challenges, but I truly appreciate being able to help residents with their concerns and working to help improve Michigan's economy.

During this Thanksgiving, please take a minute to give thanks for your blessings. You'll find that we have much for which to be thankful

Although the Michigan House only meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on most weeks, I want to make sure local residents know I am on the job every day and available to help with any concerns or questions.

As Michigan struggles with the nation's highest unemployment rate, I continue to work to help create jobs and diversify our economy. I have also been working with other legislators to seek solutions to some of our state's long-term problems.

In addition, I have many responsibilities here in Livingston County. I meet frequently with local residents and businesses, attend municipal functions and meetings, and community events to make sure I understand your concerns.
