By Coach Sean Harvey
On Sunday, January 3, WOW Wrestling participated in the annual Spartan Country wrestling tournament held at MSU. There were over 850 wrestlers in competition. We had 7 wrestlers participating in this annual event. Mason Litz and Zach McGowan finished the day taking home the 1st place trophies and Hunter McGowan finished in a very respectable 6th place.
Others participating for the team were Brandon McGowan, John Abela, Owen Gaffney and Austin Harvey. As the competition portion of the season gets underway we are excited to see all of our wrestlers put what they have been learning in the practice room to good use.
FOWLERVILLE WRESTLERS STAY BUSY OVER HOLIDAY BREAK
By Coach Dan Coon
The wrestling team practiced through Christmas break. We only took Christmas Eve and Christmas day off. We had quite a variety of practices, including a visit from of one of Iowa State University’s top performers, Jon Reader. Jon came in and showed us some of the most current techniques he is working with in practice. Shortly following that clinic Jon went on to place in one our country’s top tournaments in Chicago, the Midlands. We also had some alumni come in to show what they have learned. The wrestlers appreciate it when guys like Dillon Kern and Erick Helfmann come back in to “fine tune” them up.
Christmas Break can be long, or very short, for wrestlers depending on their attitudes. It can provide a nice two-week break to let the body heal up for the short haul from now until the State Tournament. It can provide a time period where wrestlers can really work on new attacks and fine-tune them for their next competition.
Wrestling has really become such a technical sport where you cannot just go into a match and throw down a good wrestler and pin them. It takes time and a great deal of practice to get the new moves all working together. The long part can be all the great food that is available during the break and all the extra “free” time to look at it. We all ate too much and the workouts barely balance the calories taken in. Hopefully now that we are back at school we can get back into a routine and our weights will not be in the obese ranges.
We finished the end of the break with a tournament with a mixture of old wrestlers and new going to try out some new techniques. We didn’t finish as well as we hoped, but it was a good experience that we needed. The majority of our team is new to wrestling and just need mat time for the experience. Our team is building and getting better every meet. Now it’s just a race to see how good we can be by the end of the year.
The following wrestlers that placed in the top three at the Sexton Invitational on January 2: Seth Glover 2nd, Brian Lauer 2nd, Nick Sutfin 1st, Justin Jabara 1st and Ethan Gibbons 1st. The team placed 6th overall.
Our next competition was at Corunna on Wednesday Jan. 6th. Our next Home dual is January 13, and we have a tournament for all day action on January 23 called the Mike Kelly Invitational. This tournament was put together last year to preserve the memory of Mike Kelly, one of Fowlerville’s most accomplished heavyweights. |
