We have not had cable or satellite TV for a year and a half now. It was one of the first things to go when we had to make some cuts. The kids did not like it but surprisingly I wasn't too sad to see it go! I was definitely addicted to cable TV. I would watch the most ridiculous, time wasting, reality nonsense. We have made it through with the converter box and old school rabbit ears. Between that and Netflix through the mail/Wii we have done pretty well. Until these last few months. Lately every time a semi drives by the picture and sound cuts out. Every time the cord gets wiggled the converter box shuts off. If one of the kids steps in the wrong spot in the living room everything freezes. A few days ago Joe had the rabbit ears waving them all around doing some sort of tribal dance and that didn't help. I finally had it and signed up for Direct TV. Is it inappropriate to hug the installation guy? Let's hope we don't all go TV crazy!

My kids have been saying the cutest funniest things and I think to myself every day that I just want to keep them at this age. I look back at my older kids and can't remember them being little. I know I was there but I just wish I could bottle all the memories up and replay them. I guess that's why I love to scrapbook so much! Daisy was riding in the van and says "I’m gonna try breathing with both my fingers in my nose!" as she dramatically tried to breath through her mouth with her two little fingers in her two little nostrils. "Do you wanna try Mom?" If I wasn't driving I probably would. Abram totally busted me eating chocolate moose tracks ice cream out of the carton in the bathroom (I had to hide it!) and he says "Really? Really Mom?" Yes. Really, I said.

I also cut all electronics during the day for the summer. Because of that my boys have turned our ladder ball set into weapons and pick axes. At one point they were "mining" and made offices in our pine trees. They have desks, "coffee," guards; you know all the things an office would have. They came inside to our play McDonald's set and held the place up demanding money and food. They're using their imagination I guess!

It's amazing how beautiful weather can affect moods. Earlier this week was perfection! It made me want to put on an apron and heels and bake chocolate chip cookies. It made me want to make a leaf house with my kids. It made me want to eat chocolate moose tracks ice cream in bed with lots of blankets (watching our new satellite of course)!

I'll leave you with this vision - Carla and I checked out the new Gordon Food Service. I have been so excited to have that store come to Okemos. What we stumbled upon was quite a nice surprise. An enormous sample tent was there and we weren't shy! We loaded our plates full of samples. One lady was so into her plate of samples she darn near walked into the Fuller Express. Cheesecake and meatballs will do that to you! Love that store!!

Eating is my hobby, passion, extra curricular activity, and favorite past time. That’s why I LOVE Thanksgiving. A holiday based around eating is just awesome. OK…so I’ve gained a few pounds this last year…it hasn’t been the best year for us but it is turning out pretty good. I have ALWAYS loved eating. This last year I have gone a little overboard and I suppose I should watch it. That’s what New Year’s is for right?? Joe and I focused on the good things this Thanksgiving and there are lots of good things!

Our 5 happy and healthy kids are number 1. Every day they make us laugh and appreciate life and the innocence of childhood. I am thankful that Joe is home each and every night safe and sound. Sometimes it’s not until 8 or 9pm but he makes it home. He works really hard but I get to see him each night unlike lots of wives whose husbands work out of town or are in the service or aren’t in their lives.

Halloween was great this year as usual. I love to see my kids all dressed up and excited to go trick-or-treating…waiting patiently as I take a picture of each of them in front of our pumpkins and then of course a group shot. My 12 year old was a good sport. He seems to be at the in-between stage. He dressed up as Patrick Star but when we got into town I got the feeling he wanted to be more like Freddie Crougar. I knew it was our last year to all go trick-or-treating together and I also know I’m lucky he still wanted to in 7th grade!

The Fall Fest was great considering the weather was so gosh darn golly cold. I would love to insert other words here but I won’tJ There were lots of vendors, (including me who was able to squeeze upstairs in a cozy warm corner), and lots of neat activities for kids and families to do. I think it is a great event to finish off the fall festivities and I’m glad to have something held downtown again like the ox roast used to be.

Proud owner of a Chevy Express PDF Print E-mail

I am now the proud owner of a Chevy Express van. Four adults could walk around in the back. That’s how big it is. We had to sell my dream suv that we’ve had for 2 years. I waved goodbye to my Ford Expedition a few weeks ago but was sooo glad to not have that car payment anymore.

Joe and I attended Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University in the spring and we LOVED it. We are so glad we did it and now we are working on paying off all of our debt. I knew when I bought the expedition that it wasn’t the most practical with 5 kids but I wanted it anyway. Joe wanted a 12 or 15 passenger van right from the beginning and I said “absolutely not!” Well when my friend sold me her ginormous van with rubber floors that you can literally hose down, I was ecstatic and so was Joe!

Delicious Fall PDF Print E-mail

The music of the band…the sound of tractors…and the taste of an ox burger. Yes Firemen’s Field Days has passed and I miss it already. I just love the ox roast. It starts my favorite time of year. Field Days has changed over the years but it’s still fun. When I was a kid Main St would be shut down and carnival rides would be set up. I lived right around the corner from the fair and I would walk home from school through the rides being set up and get so excited!! From my front porch I could always hear the generators running from the rides and people laughing and see the shadows from the scrambler or ferris wheel. My favorite memory from the old ox roast was the sweet street dance right next to the fire hall.

Now the ox roast is much smaller but my kids don’t know the difference. Sure there were only 4 cars in the car show and there were no rides. The ox burgers and soup were still delicious and I got to see lots of people who I hadn’t seen since last year or longer! The FFA farm toy show was awesome with neat displays and the tractor pulls went on as usual. The band marching in the parade sounded great even though they were so small. The FFA bbq chicken was delicious this year and kiddie pedal pull had a ton of kids in it! The bingo tent was full and the craft barn too. Don’t forget the beer barn … I had a blast both nights!! I am happy to say that my kids and I had just as much fun as I used to at the ox roast! I’m glad to not have to spend a fortune on rides. It’s all about community after all right?
