Keeping Up With Clayton! PDF Print E-mail

How do you keep up with Clayton?

How do you keep up with Fowlerville, Michigan’s own remarkable Clayton Klein The Walking Man that is… and author, as well… who celebrated his 90th birthday in February.

While Clayton considers none of that remarkable, his many fans and friends do. And so, to keep updated on “where-in-the-world-is-Clayton-Klein” -- I hope you’ll check in here often this year, to catch up with his latest adventures.

Walking ‘n Talking -- In a nutshell, Clayton will be doing a lot of walking and talking in the coming months.

He plans once again to make the 420- mile trek from Paradise (in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula) to Hell, MI and beyond to Ohio this coming September 2009. This will be his fifth annual walk to benefit Michigan Hospice programs. He'd  like you to join him along the way as he wends his way down the middle of The Mitten. Stay tuned for regular updates…and get ready!

Clayton’s been walking locally this spring to get in shape for his September adventure, which will once again involve the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk.  so, mark  your calendars!

You’ll also find him talking about his book, A Well-Kept Secret: The Glory Days of the Detroit Tigers, at the local Livingston County libraries. The book, published in 2007, was selected as one of the books being highlighted for Livingston Reads 2009 this spring.

 The theme is Play Ball!

Clayton spoke on March 11 for the Pinckney Community Public Library “After Hours” program.  He discussed both his book about his wife’s friendship with the legendary Hank Greenberg and his walking experiences over the past 40 years.

He enjoys fielding questions about his own field of dreams…his outdoor adventures and his writing, so be sure to catch him at these Book Talks coming up:

Thursday, May 14 Howell Carnegie Library  6:30pm Refreshments    7pm Program: A Well Kept Secret: From the Glory Years of the Detroit Tigers. ”Clayton Klein will talk about his baseball-themed book and his wife's friendship with Hank Greenberg, the Detroit Tiger Hall-of-Famer. He will also talk about his well-known walks from Paradise to Hell, Michigan. No Registration Required.“

By the time the time the Book Talks are over, in June Clayton will be hitting the pavement.. at full throttle... adding more and more miles each week to his walking routine. During the three-week walk in September, he averages 20 miles a day.

Clayton’s been gathering more walking fans each year, and a few of them are enjoying walking one of the 20-mile stretches. Walk a mile, walk five or ten, or just come out to greet him as he passes through town. The idea of the walks is to benefit Michigan Hospice, as well as to encourage everyone of every age to get walking for better health.

If anyone walks the talk, it’s Clayton Klein. Now an official nonagenarian (a person in their 90th decade) he is an inspiration to us all…to lace up our shoes, and as he likes to put it, “stand and walk.”
